Understanding Facelifts and Associated Risks

There are many facelift risks one needs to understand before selecting the right facelift procedure. As non-invasive procedures such as the Skindulgence Firming Facial system continues to have more and more customers worldwide, the debate continues to grow over these types of treatments versus the traditional surgical approach of having a facelift.

Facelift Health Risks

We must begin with the obvious risks. Regardless of the reason for the surgery – reconstructive, cosmetic, or plastic – it is still surgery! People have risked and lost their lives and limbs and suffered devastating disfigurement and scarring as a result of plastic surgery gone wrong. While the worst outcomes are rare, the risk is nevertheless a reality.

While each type of surgery has its own risks that are specific to that particular procedure, certain risks are common to virtually all surgical procedures. These risks include:

  • Infection
  • excessive or unexpected bleeding (hemorrhage or hematoma)
  • blood clots
  • tissue death
  • delayed healing
  • anesthesia risks (including shock, respiratory failure, drug or allergic reactions, cardiac arrest, coma, death)
  • pneumonia
  • loss of change of sensation
  • need for secondary surgeries/dissatisfaction with results
  • paralysis or less severe nerve damage

Unsatisfactory Results

Not every surgery is successful, and unlike most “medically necessary” surgery, the success of plastic surgery is quite subjective. Meaning that the success/failure of surgery is in the eyes of the patient – you! If your surgeon does not have the same vision as to what results you want, it can be disastrous.

Unsatisfactory aesthetic results (including contour irregularities, asymmetry, excessive or unfavourable scarring, etc.) can be disheartening or even devastating for some patients. Worse yet, the unluckiest of patients can be left with persistent pain, damage to vital tissues, or even nerve damage/localized paralysis.

Again, the list of results above was not created to scare you, rather it was created to inform you. The greatest defence that you have in protecting yourself is through educating yourself. Through education, you will be able to ask the right questions and limit your exposure to these risks/side effects.

Remember there are many types of facelifts out there that can satisfy your needs. What facelift procedure is right for you?
