What is Glutathione
Our bodies are comprised of trillions of cells. Within each of these cells is a tripeptide called glutathione. Glutathione is produced by our bodies when the correct amounts of three amino acids are present; L-cysteine, L-glutamate and glycine.
Glutathione is a very powerful antioxidant. It is often referred to as our "body's master antioxidant" as is differs from the antioxidants that you hear about from foods. Antioxidants that our bodies receive from foods are extracellular antioxidants, thus being outside the cells. Glutathione is an intracellular antioxidant and is internal to each and every cell in our body.
Maintaining a high glutathione level is essential for promoting a healthy lifestyle. As glutathione is an intracellular antioxidant, it helps to protect our bodies from free radicals starting at the most elementary levels, the cells.
Function of Glutathione in Humans
Glutathione is a very versatile molecule. Glutathione's main purpose is to stabilize unstable molecules such as free radicals and maintain important molecules such as vitamin C and vitamin E in their active form.
Free radicals are the by-product of naturally occurring processes in the body. They are dangerous to our cells health as a free radical is unstable because it is missing an electron. If glutathione was not present and able to donate an electron to stabilize the free radical, it would steal an electron from a healthy cell. This taking of an electron from a healthy cell then causes oxidative stress to the cell and damages it.
Glutathione has the ability to donate an electron to stabilize a free radical. This donation makes the glutathione molecule reactive, but is then stabilized by a second glutathione molecule. Glutathione is vitally important in all body systems, none more so than the immune system, nervous system, gastrointestinal system and our lungs.
Increasing Glutathione Through Supplementation
There are a variety of supplements that have the ability to boost the level of glutathione in your body. Some are in pill form and other types are all natural. Research has shown that our bodies can absorb naturally based supplements 100 percent more readily than synthetic supplements.*
One of the most recommended glutathione supplements is Triotein. This an all natural, lactose free whey protein providing the body with the essential amino acids need for glutathione synthesis.* In addition to have the proper levels of L-Glutamine, L-Cystine and L-Glycine, Triotein is also supplemented with vitamin D, which are all precursors to the production of glutathione in our bodies. Find out more information on Triotein here. There are many clinical studies being conducted on the health benefits of glutathione. You can read more on them here at PubMed.gov.
